How to get found on google - Search engine marketing by Matt Goatley
francophile namesakes? Dave Gorman is funny

Ok so this evening I saw Dave Gorman's show about Googlewhacking. So ok I think this is worth having some fun with. What is a googlewhack? When you type in two words on the google search engine with no punctuation and you only get 1 (one) result.

Unconstructed Superegos

Over the next few weeks lets see if we can generate some of our own googlewhacks!

Mr Gorman thanks for bringing something so fun to our attention.  :)

get a head for business before you get a head for marketing

The truth about SEO. Have you ever read a book or spoken to a marketing expert? Do you know how to write a marketing strategy? Before learning SEO, learn the age old methods and marketing ways that were employed before the Internet became so important. Why? because they are still very important.

When we offer consultancy to people we help draw up a list of achieveable goals. Step by step tested and proven methods to improve your marketing.

Do you know the difference between a product and a service based business? How important is geographical marketing to your business. Who really is your target audience?

We spend time and money researching your industry to make sure your marketing response works.

Self discipline is a big part of marketing, if you don't use your gym membership, or find it hard to stay focused you will find online marketing difficult without our help.

We are based in the United Kingdom we will come and talk to you face to face and we will give you a list of what we will actually do for the money you spend. With a full report at the beginning and on completion of the work we carry out.

Book an appointment with us today or a free phone consultation.

Results speak for them selves, the next time you get a call from an SEO or SEM company ask them how high they rank on google! we are on the front page! I think that speaks for its self.

Kind regards,

Matt Goatley

search results?? write a list! or 2 or 3

Getting Started on your website, "you don't want to hear this but you need to write a list".

  1. Write out a list of what you want to achieve
  2. Two heads are better than one, get a few friends or family members involved or your co-workers. Try to decide and write down your objectives. Try to put the items into and order of importance and create a list of keywords based on your brain storming
  3. Put a tick next to the objectives you know how to complete and put a cross next to the ones you do not.
  4. Yes you guessed it, get the things you know how to do done, research the things you don't know how to do.
  5. Write out a page plan using your list and keywords list, do this for every page you need.
  6. Don't be a perfectionist websites are not printed material you can always edit it later. Web pages are meant to grow so you don't have to write loads the first time.
  7. Add your content to your site, read it through and make sure all your links work.
  8. Test your site on co-workers, friends and family members take their feed back seriously.
  9. Setup a Google account, sign up to the Webmasters Toolkit and read the learning resources on there use the tools and reference material it's free and some of the best advice you will get.

If you want to learn more we can show you how! If you want us to do this for you let us know.

RIP Meta Tags? are meta tags dead

grave Ok so meta keywords may be dropped by well known search engines but they still hold important other features. What are the alternatives? (do i hear you scream)? Offering something ethical decent and nice.. "be good to each other".. I prefer Bill and Ted's "be excellent to each other" but hay...

So if you build a website or write content for a website offer people truly beneficial information this will help site traffic and push you along on the "organic searches".

So the truth is to get found on google you need to offer your viewers something worth their visit.

The web for me is about sharing (not illegal sharing) but helping others help them selves. Big business and globalization is taking over! So if you are one person or a small business then help your customers / viewers understand better what it is you do or offer.

The meta description tag is still the bit of text that appears on the search engine under the page title (big hint for you there). So make sure you give people what they want most. Make a list of what you offer and put it into an order of importance. Done that? then use the list to decide the most important details to go in the description. I have always found that about 24 -25 words is enough.

Semantics are all about making lists / organizing things in a logical fashion. We have seen this with code/ HTML and CSS. Now it's you're content's turn. Getting the most out of your website is all about being organized and structured so get your organizing head on and get cracking.

New Fangled Website updating software?

Welcome to How to get found on google.com or .co.uk
The whole idea started back in 2004, I (Matt) wanted to start adding useless bits of information to the Internet. Having done a lot of web site design in my time I didn't really want to have to re-style my site every time I updated (the problem with static html sites). SO? Along came CMS and now i have my own personal website with full control.

The Question: "What is a CMS system"?
Well imagine a system that lets you log in and change content this concept is often referred to as C.M.S or a Content Management System.

How does this effect you?
Since the Tinterweb started only geeks (I can say that) scientists, doctors, researchers, hobbyists, conspiracy theorists, general crazy folk and a small handful of normal people were publishing web pages and journals. Then something changed the world wide web became more and more accessible meaning that normal people could get their thoughts out there. As more and more easy to publish website systems became available people started writing stories, jokes, diaries and other logs and biographies. The web log or "blog" for short was born! The diversity has grown and exploded spliting into ever increasing specialist fields and genres. This information overload means that we can all take our thoughts to the masses and one person can make a difference, so get out there in the digital domain and read, compose and create.

What is a blog?
Well i think we have covered it a Web Log or "Blog" has become the modern way to air you thoughts or opinions. With an ever increasing amount of sites offering free blog hosting or space to put you rants everyone can broadcast their brand of thought or creativeness for the whole world wide web to see. Sites like Wordpress and (we will be here all day if i start listing) other blog sites are free! The useful thing to remember is that popular blog sites have excellent SEO value (we will get to this later). So it is time to take the bull by the horns and broadcast your business/ interests with links back to your site. Why? because you want like many others the chance to be counted and make a small dent in the world.

Google advancement?
Getting found and finding things is why this site is here. We want you to feel inspired to offer up part of your interests and funny or strange things you may find or want to put out there. Google is a bit like a digital dog! If you throw it a bone it will take it and throw it on the pile with the rest. If you update regularly then google will come back more often and the value of your content might become more important and maybe your site or blog might gain that coveted high ranking on a search engine.

So if you have something of interest about technology or the advancement of online wonderness then let us know.

SEO Trends and fashion? Narrow Casting

SEO is a strange beast, only choosing the certain few and not always doing the most predictable thing. What makes one site more popular than the next?

Popularity is part of how your site will be valued by search engines but being popular has always been a mystery to most. Were you the light and soul at high school? The trouble is that most web geeks know how to be popular online but rarely succeed in life. Maybe this is a new kind of natural selection?

Developing a site or a business is very similar in some senses and the two do often walk hand in hand depending on what market or service your offering.

If your business is very select or niche then having a web site could probably be the best idea you have had in a very long time. Designing something new or offering a bespoke, custom, rare service or product means that not many people will be out there doing it. Search statistics and other research has shown that niche businesses and sites enjoy excellent returns on their web sites. This is down to people searching for very specific terms and phrases or words.

Examples?
Lets say your a specialist car repair company based in a city? You specialty is MG Sports cars and your based in York, now lets say that your domain name is http://www.mgsportscarsyork.com. This would get you some good results but lets face it what most people will want to know is? Is there a repair or servicing specialist in York? so change your name to http://www.mgservicingyork.com or mgservicingrepairsyork.com. Now these names are going to help out because they are more likely to be the phrase people are using to find an MG specialist in York. The same applies if your selling property in Turkey http://www.propertyinturkey.eu

Using this narrow type of search means you really will home in on your potential local customer base. Businesses and services in the London area of the UK have seen this trend take hold with lots of companies, serivces and organizations gaining great response from their web sites due to being very specific about their target audience.

Narrowcasting
This new buzz word is generating change online and on search engines, giving small business a chance and making local businesses stand a chance of getting found by someone who wants a company round the corner from them to give that person what they need. Being No. 1 on google or any other search engine is all well and good but if you could make everyone near you or people who are searching for your unique service or product can now find and get in touch.

What now?
Well depending on what you do or how you want people experience your web site you can optimize? sorry optimise? to get found in searches. So if your a specialist or have a unique product or service get online and don't worry about being found for the most general terms. Get found for what you do and how specialist you are.

Narrowcasting / Narrow Casting
Make sure your site is written in a search engine friendly format regardless of the technology used, whether it be PHP, Xhtml, ASP or any other form. Just go to the google.com site sign up for an account and check out their knowledge base on making your site google friendly. Google is not the only search engine don't forget that yahoo, msn, ask and others are all important. Yes a large chunk of the population may use google but it really is not the be all and end all of search engines. Being popular is about making friends and contacts with all.
